The Brotoch Under 14’s had plenty of possession in their game against Widnes on Sunday but failed to convert it into points.
The rugby pitches at Hough end were in pretty good nick but for the occasional strategically placed pond that made them unplayable.
We were lucky enough to be able to play on one of the nearby football pitches, which meant that kicking conversions was not going to be brought into play for this match.
Equally welcome to playing, for both players and parents, was the temperature, a balmy 12 c warmer than last weeks freezathon vs Wythenshawe.
We started normally enough giving away an early try but then had great swathes of possession which we failed to capitalize from. At one point we were camped on their line for 5 minutes only to lose the ball and for Widnes to score running the whole length of the pitch. In another play, our defensive line was not up fast enough to stall a Widnes attack and their fast wing scored.
Although in the end Brotoch went down 25-10 there was much to commend in some great individual tackles as well as some fine running play. It was good to see Alex Mo celebrating his 14th Birthday by tackling guys twice his size on the wing.
All credit to Widnes who took their chances when they had them.
