Our History

Founded in 1882, Broughton Park FC is one of the oldest rugby union clubs in England, established just one year after the Lancashire County Rugby Union and eleven years after the national Rugby Football Union (RFU).

Despite its early beginnings, Broughton Park was actually the third rugby club to be established in the Broughton area, following Broughton RFC (1862) and Broughton Rangers (1877). For the first few decades, the club operated in the shadow of its neighbours in terms of national and international recognition.

That changed after World War I, when Broughton Park began to emerge as a major influence in English rugby. In 1919, A.M. Crook became President of the Lancashire Union and was also elected President of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) — a significant moment in the club's history.

Further success followed when J.E. Kidd was elected Lancashire President in 1930. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s and 1970s that the club truly entered its golden era. During this time, Broughton Park fielded as many as four international players on the pitch and continued its leadership tradition within the sport. The club produced two more Lancashire Union presidents in this period and, in 1981, John Burgess was appointed RFU President.

While Broughton Park FC never quite reached the professional top flight during the modern era, its contributions to local rugby development remain strong. The club is still widely respected for its strong traditions, grassroots development, and commitment to inclusive rugby across all ages and abilities.
