First things first, a win is a win.
After the improvement and near miss of last week, and on the back of a decent showing against Wigan, this first victory of the season is both timely and well deserved.
That said, in parts at least, it wasn’t as good a performance as the one we put in against Colne and Nelson. The opposition were under strength and by far the weakest side we have faced so far. They should have been put to the sword far earlier than they were. For much of the first half we lacked intensity and concentration, potentially due to knowing we were much the stronger side. The opening half hour was sloppy as a lot of opportunities went begging and saw us go in to the break 15-0 up, when it could have been twice that. Against a better side we may well have found ourselves trailing at the break.
The second half improved a lot. We put our heads on, achieved a better shape, thought about what we were doing more, improved our handling and our running angles were increasingly effective. The forwards dominated all afternoon at the break down, with our pick and drive game at the level of recent weeks.
Nayuss Day continued the fine form he has shown all season running in three tries, with powerful and aggressive runs, quick feet and solid defensive work. The returning Jake Spellman also had a strong outing in the centre, scoring twice. Tom Crook scored his customary try from the back row after another solid showing and the returning Jordan Dixon ran in one of the most satisfying tries of the afternoon, coming on the end of a fluid and pacey team move that saw second row forwards steaming in to wide spaces and making ground before picking the right pass. A special mention must go to our debutant Ali who showed a great turn of speed, awareness and the ability to find space. He impressed and will be an great asset to the side.
We had to loan three players at a time to the opposition and all the players who pulled on the Burnley jersey acquitted themselves well, with Lewis Marsh especially putting in a tackling performance his coach now expects to see week in, week out in the black and white of Park.
Onwards we go.
